Sounds like you need to get your original ignition switch put back in... and
a $200 refund from your mechanic!!! Did they say why they recommended
replacing your old switch? Sounds like either the new switch was defective
or they messed something up in there. From your description, it doesn't
sound likely that there was a problem with the starter at all.
If they haven't thrown away your old starter yet, it might be worth having
it tested... possibly by a different shop! If the old starter motor tests
OK, then your mechanic was probably suffering from a bought of either
incompetence or greed!
I don't think this applies to your situation, but there is a rare but known
problem with the ignition switch of which to be aware: After starting the
car and releasing the key, sometimes the ignition switch doesn't return all
the way to the "run" position. Instead, it gets stuck somewhere between the
"start" and "run" positions, leaving the starter motor running. If the
driver don't notice this has happened and just drives off, the starter motor
will keep running and probably burn out in a few minutes. Happens most
often when someone else (wife, etc.) is driving the car. :-)

Brought my s6 in about a month ago for oil change and mechanic sugg'd I
replace the ignition switch. It hadn't been a problem but had them replace
it per
advice. The next week I noticed I had to turn the key farther and farther to
get it to 'catch'. Finally it wouldn't start at all..all the ignition lights
come on etc but nothing happens. I surmised a switch issue. The mechanic
called
and said the switch was fine but the starter was gone?? They replaced
that..$200 plus labor and towing. Went to pick up the car this am..started
the first
time but felt funky so tried a couple of more times and then it wouldn't
start
as above and is sitting at the mechanics again. I'm still thinking switch
problem..not sure it was ever the starter. Any advice/diagnosis would be
much
appreciated!!!
