Joel,
This does not have to be done at the dealer; any shop with the 134a machine
can do it. The connector is not proprietary. The machine forces the 134a
in through the high side with the engine off (no pressure). The amount of
the charge is measured in advance. When I had my 90, I had a local shop do
it (two years in a row, each time my evaporator puked).
Bring it somewhere you trust and let them test the system for leaks and
charge it. It is not worth the danger to try and rig something up.
As an aside, I read regularly about folks converting their systems to
different refrigerants. I still run same stuff in each of my systems that
god and the factory intended. If I have a problem (rare), I bite the bullet
and fix it right; all my cars blow ice cold air.
Good luck.

But it's already R134a from the factory. The problem is that apparently
you're supposed to fill it in the high side service port according to the
Bentley manual somone else clipped into a previous email
