Subject: [s-cars] Galled First Gears???
I have just joined the group. Purchased a 93 S4 with 140K. Has one
problem that I wasn't too worried about when I bought it, but am more
worried now. It has a noise/growl when accelerating in first gear.
Otherwise the tranny sounds fine. I am wondering if this is the galled
first gear problem discussed here?
Can I drive it like this?
For how long?
Is there anything I can do without pulling the tranny? (Should I do a
tranmission oil change and oil analysis?)
Tim-
1st, welcome, and congrats!
Mine '95 started to do just the same soon after the MTM 1+ install @ 85k.
Surfaced one day, got a hair louder, and has stayed the same for the past
year / 20+k. Consensus seems to be that it's going to be fine for quite
some time. And, I've not altered my "hammering the hammer in 1st" routine,
either. If anything, I hammer it harder now (OK, so my CMG goes in next
month 8-)).
Oh, that, and the fact that another anonymous lister... we'll call him, er,
Bob R... no no... too obvious... R. Rossato... is recently experiencing
the very same issue, makes me feel better! HA! A chink in da armor! 8-)
Can't hurt to change the oil and have a look for particulate, of course...

'58 TR3A no synchro 1st would really make noise... if I actually started it
this year
P.S. Tim... oh! Nearly forgot The Immortal Words of Mr. Baloney! As a
new owner... go bury your wallet somewhere you'll never find it 8-)
