I was there three years ago. Had read about them, joined the list, started
to salivate. Got to know the guys on the list, really started to get the
fever.
People heard me muttering "If I weren't driving that beautiful new Range
Rover 4.0SE I'd be in an S6." I had not yet sat in one.
Then I drove my wife's A6 quattro wagon in the snow. Wow!
What a difference quattro makes. Doh.
Said the truck had to go. Time to go find a quattro wagon. Preferably an S6.
I was on the horns of a dilemma...I'm a wagon guy, but I wasn't sure that I
was going to be able to find an S6 avant. There weren't many on the market,
and they were pretty pricey. I thought about buying an A6 wagon and swapping
seats and steering wheel, doing the suspension, an ersatz S6.
Then I drove an S6 sedan.
A mildly warmed one, a stage 1 chip upgrade with a loud exhaust. Shitty car,
but oh what a kick in the ass. I booted it in second gear getting onto an
entrance ramp, and UH OH I NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME
NOW!!!
I was hooked. In August of 1982 Four Wheeler Magazine said (of the
Ur-quattro: "I hope that I will soon forget the Audi Quattro. Until I do, I
shall continue to worship that bitch goddess Success at the expense of
friends, family, honesty and decency - anything to be in a position to have
one. The Quattro is evil, an insidious witch in the guise of
state-of-the-art engineering, a circe who commands your obedience every
waking moment and a succubus who haunts every dream. She's the seductress
who recreates That First Time all over again, who snips all your tethers to
innocence and changes your life forever."
Um yes.
So I found a clean blue S6 sedan in Florida that I could afford. I sold my
truck. I mailed a check to the owner, got ready to
go check out the car (from Boston), started thinking about whether I'd ship
it or drive it back. Doh.
Got to Florida. Whoops. The car was sold out from under me. Back to square
one.
I was still in Florida. Found a green S6 avant for sale 15 miles from my
house in Boston. Closed the deal over the phone with a credit card to hold
the car till I could get back. Called back to make sure they *were* going to
hold the car for me.
That was two years ago.
I haven't had this much fun on four wheels since my college days when I was
dating a certain cheerleader and...oh, well that's another story.
Try it, you'll like it :)
