I have used the harbor freight model when I did a
clutch job on my former 944S2. 2.5 days laying on my
back btw. I had to pull exhaust, then tranny, then
torque tube, then clutch housing, then flywheel. It
seemed like it would never end! I can't see the Audi
being much worse. Worked ok except it lowered really
fast so you had to watch the revs when lowering it
with a air wrench. The straps, although low tech, did
the job if you secured them tightly.
I also supported my engine with a floor jack. The
motor mounts are still attached so the load on jack
was minimal. That's going to be my approach anyway. I
have seen a 2X4 across the strut towers with straps
attached to hold motor on other cars too. The Audis
towers are not in the right spot though (cab backward
engineering)so I expect across the engine bay will
work.
You can always spring for a Snap-On model which will
match that nice lttle red wagon you have.
