[s-cars] (NAC) 98 VW Jetta question

Start with replacing the ignition switch. Although there could be a
fault in two other places, the ignition switch commonly gets all the
abuse over the years (such as the weight of extra keys dangling from
the keychain, etc), and might have also been subjected to a theft
attempt (which would easily explain the problem).

KEN WROTE:

The car won't shut off. It's an intermittent problem. Turn the
ignition
switch off, remove the key and the car still running with all gauges
working. Played with the key to see if a switch in the ignition switch
was
stuck, but no change. Stall the car and remove the key and all the
idiot
lights are on and temp and fuel gauges are still working.
