naughty factory robot at Getrag that was applying too much preload to the
bearing.
The Porsche 968 also uses the O1E transaxle and the owners of the '92 - '95
cars are also experiencing pinion bearing failure, usually around 40,000
miles (65,000 km). This is causing great outpourings of grief on the Porsche
lists. One post actually mentioned that "some scum-sucking lowlife Audi
owners" were also experiencing pinion bearing failures - OK,OK, I'm
paraphrasing here but you get the drift :o)
The rennlist has a page devoted to the 968 pinion bearing problems
http://members.rennlist.org/martin/ - they've identified 100 cars or so
with the failure. Apparently Porsche has been less than forthcoming with
covering the repairs with the cars out of warranty. It is interesting the
problems persisted into 1995 with the 968 and were gone in 1993 with the
UrS4 - maybe Porsche pre-ordered a bunch of trannies!

'94 S4 (good robot, so far).

A lot of the '92s were delivered with the UFOs in the US, but were with
few exeptions changed to G60's. In europe, the UFOs were equipped on
cars well into 1993, and not many were changed under warranty. The
problem is that the struts, hubs and some other stuff has to be changed
as well..
The trannies are the same until the 6-speed arrived, but several have
had problems with the pinion bearing, might be a lot problem from the
bearing manufacturer. Charlie, any details on this issue?
