I just did mine last month
The 12 pt is indeed to remove the axle from the tranny. I think you can do it
without that step. I did remove mine as I had no experience with this
chassis. I have had the URQ struts off at least 4 times. All you really need to do is
get the axle out of the carrier. If you can achieve that with the inner end
still on the tranny, your all set.
The bolt that holds the axle in the hub also, when reinstalled and run all
the way in, pops the outer splined piece off of the axle portion. Nice set up.
On the earlier cars you had to pound it off. Then you can install the new boot,
grease, and clamps.
The toughest part of the entire job is getting the large clamp to slip over
new boot. I had trouble with my S6 and the same deal with my A6. You have to
preset the clamp and slide it onto the boot and then crimp it. It will not allow
you to clip it together inplace, and slipping it over will take every ounce
of strength you've got.
