[s-cars] Front Strut R&R - Not S-car but...

Gentlemen:

A buddy's mom has a 1993 90S non-quattro.  Needs front struts.  Dealer
quoted a cool grand - yeah right!!!!

My question for you is:

On the 90 series can the strut cartridges be replaced from the top a la a
5000, or does it require a full teardown a la our beloved S-cars?  I would
like to know what I am getting into before I volunteer my services.
