In a nutshell: Lightened flywheels reduce the total mass-movement of
the engine on any vehicle. This means faster RPM changes (less mass to
spin up and to spin down). The result: a more responsive engine that is
accelerates and decelerates quicker. What is the S-car? It is a
performance-oriented version of Audi's offerings. Thus, performance is
tantamount.

Note that Dave gave a good explanation, but also missed one crucial
point -- the location of the weight in the flywheel also plays a
significant role. Just as it's easier to swing a 10 lb weight on a one
foot rope than it is to swing it on a 20 foot rope, the location of the
mass on the flywheel in terms of distance from the center plays a major
role. A flywheel of lesser weight, but with that weight distributed
further away from the center can offer identical benefits as a heavier
one while reducing the load on the bearings.
