Mike,
I did this job about a year ago on my wife's car. The A6 is designed so
that the entire radiator support with everything attached can be unbolted
and pulled forward, so it is not really a bad job.
You will need to remove the bumper - held on not only by the usual bolts at
the mounts, but also by 3 studs on each side that attach it to the front of
the fenders. Remove the belly pan and get up under the bumper to find and
remove the three nuts on each side, "unsnap" the last six inches of bumper
cover from where it attaches to the fender down by the wheel, then remove
the regular mounting bolts. Pull the bumper off. Now you can access all the
bolts to remove the rad support; the upper rad hose must also but removed
from the rad, but you should be able to pull the whole support out about 8
inches.
