[s-cars] bad dashboard computer display in 2000 S4 - ideas?

Bryan,
This could be nothing more than a symptom of dirty internal contacts inside
the Instrument Cluster (IC). If so, the fix is to remove the IC, open it
up (including the hinged back side cover, clean the contacts, perhaps apply
a drop or two of contact enhancer, close it up, and put it back in the
car. Perhaps a 30 minute kitchen table job.
BTDT with an '89 200tq
While you are in there this would be an excellent time to upgrade the dim
1.1 watt instrument light bulbs with 2 watt bulbs from
rod at thepartsconnection.com. It requires about 10 of them for about $1.25
each and will make a world of difference in night time instrument visibility.
