[s-cars] Oil drain plug

S-men,
When I've read about the problem of the drain plug welding itself to the pan I've thought that you've all been doing it up too tight and that it would never happen to me!  Well, I have to eat crow, the Audi gods got me - mine is in said welded state.  A question - if I apply some heat should I apply it to the bolt or the oil pan.  I recall when a mechanic changed my transmission oil he applied it to the bolt.  I thought it would make more sense to apply it to the casing but what do I know!.  Opinions?
