Gary, it might be simply that the Germans do a lot more finish work in
their engines before letting them out of the factory.
I know for a fact that there are definitely gains to be had from a port
and polish in the LS1 Chevy and 4.6L SOHC/DOHC Ford engines.
Kind of like how without going to a larger turbo, there is very little
to be gained from an exhaust on a lot of German cars. The American
engines
leave 15-20% on the table just from exhaust and intake bolt-ons.
