oh, yes, the VW R32. the first time i saw one was in march this year
at the SCCA licensing weekend at thunderhill, when i was driving my spec
miata. in one of the practice races, i was duking it out with another SM.
we came upon a lovely silver R32 that still had dealer tags on it. the
R32 driver saw us coming, and left room at the apex of turn 1 to allow us
to pass. the other SM went through the gap, and anxious not to fall
behind, i followed, going to full throttle as i tracked out at the exit
on a line just inside of the R32's. when i was about a car length back
and closing rapidly, the R32 unexpectedly tightened his line (apparently
not realizing there was another SM). i immediately reacted by tightening
my line, and the tail stepped out about 15 degrees (i had old race tires,
and the car was twitchy). i found myself going 90 mph, tail sticking out,
and well on the way to giving the R32 a whack in the door with my tail. i
wasn't worried about my car, but the thought crossed my mind that it would
be a real shame to bash that beautiful car.
fortunately, the R32 driver immediately realized i was there, and opened
up his line, giving me room, and i slipped past him. i needed an
underwear check afterwards.
that was the first and only R32 i've seen.
