Marc-
In terms of performance, the Subaru Legacy GT 2.5 turbo is probably
the highest performance you can get for anywhere near the money.
They're selling at invoice and are capable of ridiculous power. Also,
the Legacy feels much more nimble than any of the German cars- it
feels light and tossable. A full Dynamat of the interior will make the
car Lexus-quiet.

The 2.5L engine can easily push a pretty large turbo- I actually don't
know what the Legacy is running, the STi uses an IHI VF34.

If you want a fairly large car, German, manual, big power potential,
you'll have to go for an A6 2.7T 6-speed with the big power mods-
hybrid K04s, downpipes and dual exhaust, big MAF, injectors, software
to run the whole thing, beefed up transmission and clutch. 420hp is
doable with off-the-shelf prepackaged solutions. I was about to do
this myself, but balked at the $11k cost of this kind of work. The STi
will give me crank hp figures in the same range with far less work and
will be much, much faster because it's much smaller and lighter. I'll
be happy with the stock STi until I learn how to drive it properly,
though.
