[s-cars] Re: Manual Trannies -- was no more Audis

Face the facts, Bob -- we're manual tranny dinosaurs. The old men (who
rule the world) are getting fat and lazy and the young pups are all
raised on video games -- neither seems to have the desire to shift for
themselves. Only my first car had a slushbox and it was a hand-me-down
beater from my sister -- aka the White Whale. (I'm talking about the car
here -- not my sister.) The rest have had proper transmissions.

Though I can appreciate the technology behind the DSG and embrace
certain "driver aids", such as ABS, I dread the day when I'm forced to
give up the thrill of a properly executed blip-throttle downshift. I
might be tempted into a sequential manual gearbox (as found in Champ
Cars), as I have lived with them on motorcycles for years, but that's
about as far as this dinosaur will go.

>Actually, I think those technologies are more likely to hasten the demise of the true manual. For me, as long as I have a left leg and a right arm I will drive a manual. No matter how good the SMG/DSG type transmissions may be they remove that involvement that I so enjoy about driving a manual and just make it more like a video game.
