Read a magazine interview with driver Bobby Rahal a few years ago. He
was over in Germany with a VW Golf rent-a-car and decided to give the
Ring a try. He recalled getting passed by an S-class Merc on the inside
of one of the corners. Seated in the back seat was Granny, who was
knitting all the time. A humbling experience, which demonstrates the
advantage of course familiarity. :-)
A similar story with a different twist -- a US car magazine writer was
driving a new Toyota Supra at the press release at Laguna Seca. He
thinks he's doing a pretty good job navigating the course, when he spots
a Toyota Tercel gaining on him. The Tercel finally passes him -- Dan
Gurney at the wheel, grinning like a madman. Guess this one would fall
under course familiarity and skill level.
