When we swapped the AAN motor for the blown ADU motor in the 95 S2 rally car,
there is no doubt in my mind that these two motors are identical save the
standard issue bolt on parts we have all known to love and adore. We cked every
single part, including measuring critical parts and comparo of part numbers
themselves. If there is a difference, it has to be to the part number expost
facto, which again there was no evidence of. There is no subtle or obvious work
to unshroud valves (or any other work) in the head. We did have some
clearancing by the lifters, which, when we cked MTM, they said that was for one of
the high lift cams (er, illegal of course in a group A car).
Minhea, I know that the AAN here in the states were all supposed to get metal
head gaskets from the factory. A buddy of mine who worked at the local
dealer called me on the first warrantee work they did on a 92 S4. He proudly
pulled out a shiny metal head gasket indicating the new part (and I bought one then
and there to redrill and use on a 10vt). But, then again, I've seen old audi
bin parts installed on later production cars, and this might have been the
case for fibre headgasket leftovers from the 3B that found their way into early
AAN motors. I would still suspect it, and have never seen nor heard of it
until you yesterday. Anyone here in the states with this anomoly?
James, with regard to running high boost in the aluminum block. I sure
wouldn't do it. I would read any audisport documentation, read some of Ned's
posts in these very archives, or ck with Lehmann direct. These alum motors don't
do well with high boost pressures (read: cracking)

FYI, the 3B, ABY, ADU & AAN share the same part numbers for:
pistons & Ring set (034 107 065 M)
head casting (034 103 351 N)
head gasket (048 103 383 AD)
The 1994 Performance Car test of the RS2 said CR was 9.0. I suspect they
rounded the number (shame on them for implied accuracy by reporting it
to the tenths). The only other explanation could be that the RS2 had
extra head work done to un-shroud the valves.
