[s-cars] Magnetic filters for oil any good?

I agree that "more is not always better", but in this case, the more isn't going to hurt, and at worst will make no difference whatsoever...for less than $5 to try it, it's a drop in the bucket compared to some mods ;-)

Although it might not help much on my AAN, I'm certainly going to try and pick one of these magnets up for my fathers and brothers diesel van that gets a lot of city use...

/James.

With a 3 psi difference between cylinder compression at 142Kmiles with
an 8Kmiles oil and filter change interval since new, I'm not really sure
the AAN really needs improved filtering. It may be worth it for highly
modified engines but I feel stock engines are already very well
protected. More is not always better.

Not sure I completely agree with your first point.... but I certainly
agree with you on the 2nd one and for under $5 dollars I think it's a
worthy experiment to find out if you are right about the first point...

This place has them for cheap and all different sizes:

Cheers, /James "no turbolators for me" Murray.

P.S. Going to try it on my car and my father's diesel van...

My inclination would be to suggest that this is wasted effort and
ex$pen$e. With an aluminum engine most of the bits of metal inside the
engine should be also of aluminum. Aluminum is a non-magnetic metal and

will not be attracted to a magnet. Granted, there are steel parts as
well
and bits of wear debris from the steel would tend to be collected by a
magnet. The question would be, "Is it enough to make a difference?"
That
can perhaps be best answered by two more questions. "How frequently do
you
change the oil and filter?" "Do you use a quality filter?"

The third question would be: "If this actually is a good idea then why
spend ~$50 for a magnet when quality magnets can be purchased for FAR
less
than $50?"

The fourth question might be: "Psst! Hey, Buddy - wanna buy a
Turbolator
for your car?" :-)
