Ask for the electrical half of the switch.

The reason the starter can get affected is that the switch gets stuck in the Start position.  This is also why you have no HVAC, lights, etc. as these items are disabled through the X cut-out relay when in the Start position to reduce the battery load.  So, after you start the car turn the switch back slightly to make sure you are in the Ignition position (fans/lights working) to save your starter.
