sounds like you're talking about the rotor. you should be able to tell
by looking at it. i'd be surprised if it were, because the brushes are
usually a lot softer than the rotor.
have you checked the alternator bearings? if the bearings are bad, the
brushes will die quickly. you might be able to get replacement bearings.
