Just one comment on EYE-talian cars from a paisan...
My family of pure-blooded Italians, six of us, once owned six FIAT's, mine
being a modified '72 124 SPort Coupe. Funny how we never had any problems
with them. Just treated them like most of us treat our Audi's...change the
oil often, drive them hard and smooth. When I sold my coupe, it had 172k on
the engine with the only time it failed me being the fuel pump giving up the
ghost in rush hour traffic on the Hollywood Fwy...it only had 90k+ on it.
Engine compression was actually above spec and it was modified with dual
dual-40mm Webers, cams, free flow intake system and Ansa exhaust...which
also didn't die in SoCal. Sucker ate stock 911's at speed, but not off the
line. Brother's first FIAT, a 128 box coupe, was modified to where it would
eat 911's off the line. Now, he actually broke a few things on it, as he
could get the front end to go up so hard on acceleration that he'd lose
traction up front and come crashing down again. When he got smart, he
replaced it with a 124 Spider. Lil' sis replaced her 128 3P with a Lancia
Zagato...actually two, as her new husband totalled the first one. Dad
replaced his 131 with an Alfa Milano, as did my older sister, who now drives
a ur-S4. Now Dad's Milano did have some issues that took a couple of
years to set right. But the others were just fine, thanks. Mom and Dad
later deserted to Infiniti's for the service in their old age. All told,
less issues in 8 or 9 Fiats, plus two Lancia's and two of the three Alfa's
(I picked up a '78 Alfa Sprint Veloce along the way) than with most of the
Audi's on this list...it would seem.
Just an early morning reflection...
Steve
