[s-cars] sympt of a stock turbo failing?

James, from my experience, you can't automatically assume that a change in
noise/whine/spoolup means that the turbo is failing. With that said,
sometimes a noisy turbo does mean that it is failing. There are many an S4
out there running the stock turbo at 150-200k mi. I've had exactly 5 turbos
on my S4 since I've owned it. 4 K-24's and 1 K-26. Every K-24 I've had on
the car sounded differently. Some completely silent, some with an audible
flutter at high boost(23psi) some whiney when cold. The one noise that was
very different from the rest was the K-24 with a 1 slightly bent impeller
blade. It was an extra loud audible whine. Drove it like that for two years,
lots of boost, no failure and minimal center section play. None of these
turbos were removed because of failure. It was done more for experimentation
than anything else. Seems even the K-24 can be very robust even with a Stage
1+. However, I'm sure many others may relate other experiences. Yes, they
are rebuildable but at quite a cost. May want to look for a low mileage used
one for much less. I am currently turbo-less in my inventory. HTH,
