The VMAP's variable transducer jumper settings does offer the ability to get around some serious restrictions, like altitude or 91 octane. If the car in question is moved to a geography that allows better gas or lower altitude, the jumpers can easily be changed. Or going to the track and using race gas. Kinda gives the uneducated (me) the ability to do some "gross" chip-tuning to keep from blowing the engine. Optimal? No. Practical? Very.
One can (and I'm sure they will) argue that a custom-tuned car will do the same, but I didn't at the time nor currently do have access to a custom chip tuner. Hell, I don't even have access to a dyno. I can tell you that EVERY MTM chipped 3.0 bar URS-car in SoCal I know of pings like a dog on 91 octane.
If you don't have fuel or altitude problems, as Joe points out, just pick the correct HP for you wallet, and go with it.
