During this afternoon's heat wave (3 above!) I purchased a tow strap at
Napa and with my wife's 93 100csqw tow-started it. It is so cold that
the clutch does not release sufficiently fast to roll start. Of course
it didn't help that I was on a nearly flat slope.
Man, was the car grumpy. Normally it's in the garage every night----last
night it had to stay outside in 15 below temps. Before the tow-start, I
again tested accessories to see if they dimmed or cut out while key was
to "start". Radio, overhead lights did not cut out or diminish while key
was in "start" position. As it was daylight I can't confirm what
headlights did.
After allowing a little warm up, I drove it to Anderson Motorsports. I
had discussed the situation with them prior to leaving home. They were
thinking "switch or starter" and in their opinion, what I was describing
would not be resolved by a new battery. Two hours later I get the call
that it was the switch---the starter's OK.
I've also decided to replace the battery, which it turns out is still
the original from the Aug 1992 in service date... can you believe that?
Better think about updating the battery in my wife's car. Since we've
owned that car since 1996---I'm fairly certain it's original also.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I appreciate the prompt
replies (received some within 2 minutes of hitting send!).
Take care & stay warm!
Eric
