[s-cars] Re: BMW M3 E36

I almost bought a '97 M3 from a friend when it was coming off lease. I
had never driven an S4/6 at that time, so it's difficult to compare, but
just a couple of points -- car has lots of torque, transmission has a
nice-sounding mechanical whine in all gears, it's fast and fun to drive.
A great autocrossing car, seems like half the BMW's at the BMWCCA
autocross are M3's, for a good reason. It's fast and nimble. Much
sportier and more agile than the S4/6.

Now the bad news -- my friend took it out the first day it lightly
snowed with summer tires and immediately did a 360 in the car. My
former boss had one in Syracuse with snow tires and said it was
driveable in winter with snow tires, on the other hand, my friend
immediately put it away for the winter and bought a beater car. The
S4/6 is bigger, much more practical and on snowy winter days when
everyone is panicking about getting home, you take the long way home so
you can enjoy the drive.

Two different animals, someday I'd like to own an M3 and probably will,
but I'll definitely need a winter car.

They M3 is great if you live in an area that doesn't
get any snow, or rain for that matter. The urS4 will
get you where you are going in any weather. And if an
urS4 and an M3 were going down the highway at 80 mph
when an officer of the law hit them with radar, I'd
rather be in the urS4, as it is less... conspicuous.
