Just as an FYI I have a 95 m3, with 220k on it .. It has been VERY VERY trouble free... the head has never been off the car.. The car is tracked regularly and it burns literally no oil...
I have owned a 93 s4, great car.. also.. I would say the BMW technology is a but newer, its is abit more reliable not to say that the s4 wasnt. dollar for dollar the m3 is less expensive to maintain and there is probably a greater amount of people out there who can service it properly than a ur-s4
Hope that helps//
