[s-cars] Erratic Gas Gauge

My fuel gauge seems to have become unreliable.  Between 180 and 220 miles
into the tank the gauge will fall off to completely empty and the Gas
warning dummy picture comes on.  When I fill up, the gauge usually only goes
back up to 3/4's or so.  The specific moment that the gauge decides to stop
working may be related to a sudden stop, etc, but it does always happen.
Any ideas here?  Is this something I'll have to get into the tank for?
