One thing I noticed w/ my K&N filter in the STOCK airbox is that it
didn't fit quite as tightly around the edges of the airbox as an OEM
filter did. Thus the potential for things to slip by if not totally
sealed.
I am running a K&N Cone filter and take care to clean and oil
every 3-4 months. Now wheather the wear on my old block was a result of
dirty air or poor maintaince by previous owner is unknown.
Just my 2 cents

I will once again share my finding on the K&N filter. I had one on my
car
while I still ran the stock air box, with RAIS(ram air intake system) of
course.
When Dave Jones pulled that out to mount the PBMAF mit Ford SVT Snorkel
box we
noticed the leading edge of the inducer had been damaged with lots of
little
pit marks. It was from the left over bits that the K&N didn't filter
out. I
ended up taking the turbo to TEC for a rebuild. There is also the
possibility of
damaging the hot coil from too much oil when you clean/service the
filter.
Hap, no longer usin K&N but FORD stock filters in Evahboost, Maguire
