Doug -

My apologies if this seems like beating a dead horse, but....

FWIW, I was unaware of this before, in his chapter "Turbocharging, Past
& Present" A. Graham Bell offers the following bit of Porsche trivia
along with a cut away photo, "The Porsche 944 in 1985 ..... feature
contributed to this 2.5-liter 2-valve engine producing 217hp at 5800rpm
and 243lb/ft of torque at 3500rpm. (In 1989 this increased to 274hp and
258lb/ft.) The intercooler dropped intake charge temperatures from
130°C to 50°C under ideal conditions. [emphasis added] TO KEEP HEAT IN
THE EXHAUST GASES FOR QUICKER TURBO SPOOL UP, THICK CERAMIC LINERS WERE
FITTED IN THE EXHAUST PORTS (this also assists cooling by preventing
heat transfer to the head) and the exhaust headers WERE DOUBLE WALLED
STAINLESS TUBES...." page 51, of Bell's "Forced Induction Performance
Tuning, a Practical Guide to Supercharging & turbocharging."

I could probably scan a copy of the cut-away photo, illustrating the
ceramic port liners. I've never heard of Audi doing this, but who knows
on some of its IMSA projects, perhaps....? FWIW, the ceramic port liner
in the cut away picture looks to be quite thick ~ a lot thicker than I
would guess a Swain barier coating would be.
