[s-cars] tie rod ends repair

Hi Everybody,

I recently had my 1995 S6Q in the shop for an alignment after getting new 
tires.  The shop couldn't get the front left wheel into spec because it 
needed a new tie rod end.  The shop wants to replace both sides with the 
full tie rod assembly, not just the tie rod end.  Is this customary?  Is 
there sound rationale for doing all of this work?
