[s-cars] Kinda mbarrassing question

I do the same.  When using my floor jack or stands at the jacking points I
put a little piece of wood in the center so the weight is basically where it
should be and I don't damage the edge of the  receptor (which I did one time
without).  Of course, being a Canuck, what do you think I use for the piece
of wood?  You guessed it, a piece of hockey stick shaft.  I also use a pad
of some sort (even a piece of folded terry towel ) when putting the stands
on a place where there is undercoating.
