Considerably smaller than an A-6, huh?   Well a newer S-4 certainly fits
that bill.  You can buy used M3s for around this price.  A Trans Am/Camaro
would work as well if you don't care about all-weather performance (goes for
the M3 as well obviously).  You might consider a Subaru WRX-STi when they
start coming available on the used market.  I don't know if you can get one
this cheap but an Acura NSX might be a nice treat, you might have to go back
to a '96 to '98 for this price range but you could probably find one with
low miles.  I guess that would be my short-list for now.

FWLIW, I recently witnessed a grown man cry when he
finally bought a 308, his dream car for years, and
grenaded the motor when a pebble kicked into the
timing belt and...BOOM!

Insurance company did end up footing the 30k bill for
the motor rebuild, but he was nervous for a while
there.
