[s-cars] RE: New or nearly-new car purchase

I think a lot of people on this thread are getting the WRX STi and the
standard WRX mixed up. The STi is a much more potent machine. 300 HP with
all the "goodies" such as Front to Rear AWD bias adjustment, limited slip
diffs on both ends, Brembo brakes, etc.

I saw someone make the comment that the WRX STi and the newer S4 were about
the same in performance and I know in a straight line that's not true and I
can't imagine how it's true in the twisties but I can't say for sure. The
normal WRX I can see being about equal.

You can't get a WRX STi for 15-17k, it was only released about 8-10 months
ago. The thing that still really bothers me about it is the lack of a rim
around the side windows which is prone to leaks and wind noise. Sheer
straightline performance we are talking low to mid 13's in the 1/4 mile at
about 105 mph, a full second faster than a stock newer S4.

he wanted a 2000 or newer. $25k won't get you an E46 M3. at that
price, he'd be looking at E36 - 1999 or older. still nice cars.

you can get a WRX for around $15k-$17k these days.

the problem is, it's hard to get power/performance, refinement, and
reliability all in one package. never mind the $25k limit.
