the maintenance-free compressors are direct drive and noisy. an
"oil lube" compressor is typically belt drive, and noticeably quieter.
2-stage compressors are quieter, too, and are capable of achieving higher
pressures. this may not seem like a big deal because most tools don't use
more than 90 psi or so, but if you have 175 psi in your 30 gallon air tank,
that is a lot more air than 125 psi in the same tank.
i have a maintenance-free 2-stage air compressor with a 30 gallon tank.
got it from sears for $375. it's pretty quiet, and makes no more noise
than a laundry machine or vacuum cleaner. admittedly it's still loud,
but not so loud that the neighbors will start complaining.
if price is an overriding consideration, harbor freight has air compressors
for $150 or so.
