Well that explains the general improvement of car body condition I've
noticed over the past few years.  Detroit must have been forced into it,
because the method of galvanizing without generating spangles, which
make even painting difficult, was reported in the early '70s in Machine
Design, or Design News, forget which.  Before that, and after that for
quite a while, the only car I recall having any galvanize was the bottom
of the Corvair.
