what can I do as far as turbos go, to get better performance, without going
rs2 spec?

Easiest way to go is KKK/Garrett hybrids. They will bolt on to Audi EMs, but
require oil/coolant line fabrication.

currently running mtm 1+. can I get above 300hp with turbo/manifold
upgrades?

This past weekend, I installed a 50 trim Garrett/KKK K26 #6 hot side with a
stage 3 turbine wheel onto my friends '94, along with an RS2 EM. The extra
work (compared to RS2) involves the oil/coolant line fabrication. Plan on 6-8
hours of work, depending on your experience. His car has a TAP chip in it, that
allows 18-19 psi peak, and fades the boost to about 15psi above 5k rpm. His
car used to show about 215 on the G-Tech, and after changing the turbo and EM
and nothing else, it now repeatedly shows 285-296. For comparison's sake, my
fully RS2'd S4 shows a peak of 301-302 on the G-Tech, running 25psi, and on a
4 wheel dyno it showed 325hp atw. There is, however, a down side. At this
point, his boost threshold is above 4k rpm. This is not acceptable for a daily
driver, so we are working to bring this figure down. The peak hp, however, is
phenomenal, considering just a turbo and EM swap.

We will be installing the RS2 MAF, injectors, and 3 bar software for our next
tests, and we'll see if this helps.

Also, do not be fooled by the Turbonetics version of the KKK K26 hot side, as
it is a replica of the #8. This hot side will be even worse, in terms of
boost threshold, than the #6. I was duped into buying one of the "RS2 killer"
turbos by a lister in the Marketplace, and when I received it, it had the #8 hot
side. The pictures in the add, however, were of a hybrid using the #6...
pictures snagged from Javad's 034EFI site, and pasted into this guy's add. Just
a warning, as I think this turbo would be absolutely miserable on any "normal"
2.2. Mike Pederson (mlped) will be testing it soon on his highly modified
S4, and it will be interesting to see how it performs on an engine with
considerably better than stock breathing capabilities.
