You won't be able to buy just the 1st gear & mainshaft for that price.
To put in the late (wide) gears requires changing the center section
of the transmission housing.  I was quoted over $3000 to rebuild my 
original 5 speed, and that was using standard replacement gears and 
not changing the trans center housing.

Labor to rebuild the gearbox (by someone who knows what they are doing)
along with R&R will run almost $1000 by itself.

If you can get a DSY for $1000, that's a steal.  Get it.
