Hi all,
Today I returned from a trip down to Tennessee for my little bro's
graduation. My wife and I took her S6 Avant on the 1500 mile round trip. Well about
three hours in I pulled off to get gas and as I pulled out from the stop sign on
the off ramp I heard a loud scraping coming from the passengers side rear of
the car, I immediately pulled over and just before the car stopped, BOOM and
the car came to a sudden stop. Rachel looked out of her window to see the rear
tire was flat and when I got out to look at it I found that the heim link had
worked its way down on the threads and had come loose at the top and swung down
where it caught on the inside of the wheel and drove right through. The tire
was fine but the wheel was not, it had a hole the size of a quarter on the
inside of it. On top of that I forgot my lug wrench so we walked down to the
nearest store for some wrenches and a breaker bar. I got the spare on and was able
to reconnect the swaybar. We called around and found a tire rack that had
another wheel (OZ supperlag) but it was in south bend Indiana and they would be
closed by the time we got there but we didn't have much choice so we headed
down and spent the night there. The next morning we were able to get a new wheel
and have them swap the tire onto it. All went well from then on. The reason
the heim link worked its way down was because I didn't tighten the nuts on the
top and bottom of the threaded shaft enough so it worked its way loose. Anyway
good thing to keep an eye on.
Elijah
