To be serious, the '98 540i 6-speed will not handle as well as a
528i sport package due to the increased weight up front and the
recirculating ball steering does not feel as "precise" as the
rack and pinion setup of the 528.

The 540, however, will handle better than the S6. You're not going to
be able to chase pony cars in the 540, though- even a well-driven
AC Schnitzer S5S couldn't keep up with the Porsches and pony cars at
the Glen.

Depending on your dealer, the BMW is not going to be any better
than the Audi. In my area, there are a couple really excellent BMW
dealers that kill the local Audi dealers in terms of customer service,
but that may not be the case in your area.
