It definitely uses a different sensor than the gauge (which uses the
MFTS on the coolant manifold).  I think the sensor the HVAC uses must be
on a coolant circuit that is mostly blocked off when the heater is off.
With the heater off, the climate control computer will indicate a
lower temperature (by ~20C) than it does when the heater is on.

BTDT, replaced a perfectly good thermostat because of it.
