[s-cars] Gack! No compression, no start,

Is the timimng belt intact? The valves could be not closing because the camshaft isn't turning. I would think this would cause more problems than what you are seeing, i.e. contact with valves, but just a thought.

Subject: [s-cars] Gack! No compression, no start,

Really weird situation here…some of you may recall my post from last
month talking about my non-starting 1993 S4 with only 90k miles.
Well, it STILL won't start. Drove car on 600-mile trip, parked for
one day then tried to start—no go. On attempted start engine turns
over, belts turn, have spark, have fuel, no ECU codes showing except
2112—which is because the engine is not running. All sensors and
injectors pass the "click" test when ECU is put into test mode.

It sounds like it has no compression when turning over. Today, my
mech confirmed that it *doesn't* have ANY compression in ANY cylinder!
He pulled the valve cover and discovered that everything is
completely sludged up. He pulled the oil drain plug and just a
trickle came out, even though it is only about a quart low. It sounds
like a car that hasn't had an oil change in 30,000 miles, but it
isn't. I've always run Mobil 1 15-50. It was overdue for a
change—about 6000 miles since last oil change--but this seems nuts!
The mech says he's never seen anything like it—neither have I. He is
theorizing that the valve lifters are so clogged with sludge that all
the valves are remaining open, hence the 0 compression. Anyone have a
better theory, or seen anything like this before?

Since we can't start it I don't know of any way to clean out the
sludge. If it was running I could put some light oil/ATF in the
system and run at idle for a while to try to flush things out, but
with no pressure how can I flush it? 8-[ Is Mobil 1 the culprit
here?

Any BTDT or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

--Sz
