[s-cars] Purchasing a used Audi in Europe?

I suggest buying the car in Germany, which is pretty much the "used
car lot of Europe". Why? The german technical inspection is very
strict, and often by the time a car gets to 5-6 years old it is
cheaper to buy a new car than to continue maintaining it as necessary
to pass inspections.
For a S-car this is also good news since high horsepower cars are very
expensive to insure (for example a stock UrS4 was going to be as much
as my 968 CS !!!!), therefore they tend to depreciate very fast.
You can get export plates in Germany which can be used to drive the
car to where you are going. Usually you can buy (overpriced)
insurance for these from the plate stamping shop. You can also try to
get this from ADAC.de To get these "ausfuhrkennzeichen" the car has
to be current on techincal and emissions inspections.
You can crank this page through google for more info: http://tinyurl.com/5q37t
(ADAC is the german equivalent of AAA)
If buying from a private party, then the best thing to do would be
have it inspected by an Audi Zentrum (dealer).
The best place to search is www.mobile.de
When buying from a dealer, sometimes they quote the price "inkl MwSt"
or "inclusive Mehrwertsteuer" THis is the 16% VAT that you would NOT
have to pay if you are taking it out of the country. However if they
say "MwSt ausweisbar" then it is not included. (Export price)
As far as I can tell (and from experience) there aren't any tax
considerations in a private sale. Therefore, for export, usually you
can get a great price from a dealer, since his "net price" has to be
reasonably competitive with private sales.
Another consideration is that a dealer now has to provide a warranty
with any used car they sell. Therefore you might run less of a risk of
getting a lemon than with a private sale.
Cheers,
Keith
