Fellow S-geeks,
Well, after several months of rebuilding the car... suspension bushings, rear
torsen diff, CRB 6 speed, Centerforce clutch, LW flywheel, axle boots, engine
with Carillos, tube header, full GT30R, 3 1/2 exhaust from the turbo back
using NASCAR oval tubing under the car (better clearance than the stock system!),
etc... the car is once again on the road.
After a long troubleshooting session with Hap to determine why #5 wasn't
firing (who allowed me to swap the majority of his ignition parts to my car), I
finally removed my head from a dark orifice, and remembered that I had swapped
pins on my POS to change channels. Trouble was, I was using a different set of
coils and harnesses. Problem solved. Next issue was a nagging little
coolant leak from the back of the block... which turned out to be a hairline crack
in the plastic nipple that exits the rear of the block. Replaced that with a
metal one from an early car.
Everything in order... heading out for the first drive. Fortunately, there
were no surprises. The GT30R is an interesting animal. It doesn't really make
big power until about 3800rpm (at 7000ft+ above sea level), but then look
out. My break in setup is simply stock injectors, stock MAF, an ECU with a stage
1 chip, and stock IC... nothing special. Turning a left corner in first
while punching it resulted in 2 light strips of rubber on the pavement via the
torsen rear end. Wow.
In all, it will be interesting to see what kind of power this thing makes.
After some break-in miles, I'll be off to the dyno. I'll post my results.
Take care,
Dave in CO
