[s-cars] Heading down the header slope

Folks
All the turbo talk has set me thinking about a couple of things.  One is
that you sure don't find this grin making go fast banter on the A8 lists
and the other is just what are the considerations in designing an
optimum equal length tubular header?  
I seem to recall or maybe imagined seeing one incarnation of the header
with cylinders one and five rejoining the downpipe south of the turbo??
I cannot fathom why this would be (or maybe it never was.)  But, aside
from that, and trying to avoid right angles in design, what else makes a
good tubular header?
