That makes me think of my effort to oil the highway some years ago.
I had a 2.4L Porsche 911 engine stuffed into the back end of a VW Microbus.
You should recall that the 911 is a dry sump engine. So, the battery had
been relocated to under the back seat, and the Porsche 12 quart oil tank
was located in the right rear corner of the Microbus engine compartment.
Various and sundry other bits had been fabricated to bring all this about.
So, one cold morning I was on the freeway, on the way to work. I needed
to move 2 lanes to the right, so (of course), I nailed it in 3rd gear
and sped around a couple semi-trucks and over into the right exit lane.
I looked behind myself, and didn't see anything. Nada, nothing, just
a blank gray visage in the rear view mirror. Then, it dawned on me
that there was this huge gray cloud following me. Being in the exit
lane, I pulled over on the exit ramp, got out, and went to the rear of
the Microbus to see what was causing the gray cloud.
First thing I noticed, was that the whole back of the Microbus was
dripping oil. Opening the engine lid, I saw that the exhaust headers
were merrily blazing away. These headers being roughly located under
the passenger's side of the engine which was also (coincidentily)
located roughly under the gas tank. YeeHa.
Not having the handy dandy fire extinguisher, I drove quickly up
the exit, right into the street, and a quick two blocks to a quarter
car wash. Fire was extinguished. (sigh)
Turns out the oil return line from the engine back to the oil tank
(remember the comment about locally fabricated parts?) had parted,
and the Porsche oil scavenge pump, being the splendid thing that it
was, had scavenged about 12 quarts of oil out of the engine and onto
the probably red hot 3 into 1 exhaust header pipes.
I'd have loved to hear the semi driver's comments when I flew past
them and probably coated their windshields with a layer of oil.
The best part of the story, there didn't seem to be any damage to
things like engine bearings from lack of oil ...
