... and not to forget the importance of heat sink compound when you
mount the PSO on any metal plate. Read any installation manual on how
to mount CPU's on the heat sink. Any kind of air gap between the PSO
and the metal plate really kills your heat transfer coefficient and the
temperature of the device shoots up. I used the same heat sink compound
on my PSO's as I used on my Pentium chip (Arctic Silver), cleaned both
surfaces to get them as much in contact with each other as possible.
You might consider just adding a some fins on the back side of the
existing metal plate they're mounted on, wouldn't require changing any
of the wiring or moving the PSO's, would increase the surface area for
better heat transfer to air.
Couple of 1/16" thermocouples tacked to several locations should tell
the whole story of what's going on, if you have access to that kind of
stuff and a portable TC readout.

Okay, horrible photo, but it gets the point across. My strategy for
extended life of POS is to a) mount both POS to big heat sink from an
old server, b) relocate POS/sink unit behind the firewall in the "tray",
and c) mount POS/sink unit using rubber to reduce shock and vibration
(haven't done this yet).
Once this is all done, I would be happy to zap the POS with an IR
thermometer and compare with other cooling schemes, including 2.7t (got
one of those, too), and stock. Since I don't have an IR thermometer
yet, I will only be able to
do this as soon as I can borrow one (probably when I finally get to the
track). I'll report data as I get it.
