[s-cars] RE: Original Chips

OK... now I just have to jump in here. The 10 mile commute / 21mpg was a
stretch, but a 3 mile commute with 10 degree weather getting 19 mpg? I
suppose it's possible, but I am surprised, or maybe envious. I have had a
2.5 mile commute and a 5 mile commute in San Francisco where the outside
temp range is almost always 55-70 degrees. I get 12 mpg. ;-( A tank
rarely gets me > 200 miles. On the highway though, I can get 22 mpg.
:-) Granted I might need a tuneup or some other repair, but stop signs,
lights, and cold starts can easily eat up twice the fuel as does going 75
mph on a clear day for 100 miles at a time.

Riff,

Heck, on my current (temporary) commute of 3 miles, 1 on dirt, all in
0 - 10 degree weather, my car didn't even get to closed loop operation
and I would get about 19 MPG. AND, my t-stat was stuck open. Didn't go
WOT though (just CAN'T do that to a cold engine). New T-stat and I'm
over 20 to 21 same commute. Something is wrong with the car man. If
you have a new O2, it's back to basics, check T-stat, air filter, fuel
filter, injectors, etc.
