Though this runs counter to the philosophy of "wider is better", but I'd 
stick with a 245/40, because:

They're cheaper than 255's
They're lighter than 255's
They will most likely give you a better footprint (more rubber meeting 
the road) than 255's

Cheaper is good and lighter means the tire stays in contact with the 
road more. The 245's will also lay flatter w/ the 8" rims and will most 
likely be more effective than the wider tires. Opinions may vary, but I 
think you should save the $$ and spend the money on something nice for 
yourself. Sheepskin headrest covers, or whatever makes you happy,  :-)
